Johan Gising and Maxim Galkin participated in the Nobel Forum Satellite Event: Green Chemistry for Sustainable Materials 2025, held in Uppsala on May 19, 2025, presenting work on biomass fractionation, tailored lignin and its potential in advanced material applications.
In the contribution “One process of biomass fractionation, endless possibilities for tailor-made solutions,” Johan Gising and Maxim Galkin presented an approach where lignin is not simply separated from biomass, but its properties are tailored already during the fractionation process. By combining fractionation with in situ lignin stabilization and modification, different lignin qualities can be produced from the same lignocellulosic raw material for different downstream applications.
The event also featured “Active Lignin Stabilization Pulping for Electrochemical Energy Storage Materials,” by Maxim Galkin, Anna Iurchenkova, Serena Frasca and Johan Gising. This work highlights another important direction for tailored lignin: developing renewable materials for electrochemical energy-storage applications.
For AB Karl Hedin Bio Innovation, the two contributions illustrate the versatility of our technology. Instead of producing a single generic lignin, the fractionation chemistry can be adapted to create materials with properties suited to different applications—opening opportunities to convert sawmill side streams into higher-value functional materials.
The Green Chemistry 2025 event provided a valuable opportunity to discuss how advances in biomass chemistry and material design can contribute to more sustainable alternatives to fossil-based materials.
