Johan Gising, CEO of AB Karl Hedin Bio Innovation, has been elected Vice Chairman of the Board of FibRe, a Vinnova Competence Centre dedicated to developing lignocellulose-based thermoformable materials that can replace fossil-derived alternatives.
FibRe brings together Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Chalmers Industriteknik and 21 industrial partners, creating a broad collaboration across the fibre-based materials value chain. The centre combines expertise in polymer and fibre science, molecular modification, advanced characterisation and processing.
In its second phase, FibRe is moving further towards application-oriented development. Research focuses on modification, advanced characterisation and processing of lignocellulosic materials, complemented by demonstrator projects in extrusion, injection moulding and thermoforming. These activities are intended to bridge fundamental research with increasingly application-relevant material concepts.
The work aligns closely with AB Karl Hedin Bio Innovation’s activities in biomass fractionation and tailor-made lignins. The company develops lignins with properties adapted to specific applications, including use in polymer materials and other advanced bio-based products.
