Maxim Galkin, CTO of AB Karl Hedin Bio Innovation, was invited to give a talk about “Stabilization strategies to tailor-made lignin for materials” at SCS2025 – the 3rd National Meeting of the Swedish Chemical Society, held in Västerås on 16–18 June 2025.
The meeting brought together around 350 chemists from academia and industry, covering a broad range of research areas and providing a platform for scientific exchange and new collaborations.
In his presentation, Maxim highlighted different strategies for stabilizing lignin during biomass fractionation and how controlling lignin chemistry already during extraction can be used to produce materials with properties adapted to different applications. This approach is closely connected to the technology developed at AB Karl Hedin Bio Innovation, where lignin is functionalized and stabilized in situ during fractionation of woody biomass.
Rather than treating lignin as a uniform by-product, the aim is to control its molecular structure and functionality to improve performance in downstream applications. Tailored lignins can open opportunities in areas such as polymer composites, coatings, energy storage and other advanced bio-based materials.
Participation in SCS2025 provided a valuable opportunity to discuss recent developments in lignin chemistry and material design with researchers from across the Swedish chemistry community.
